Dr. Rodrigo Torres, BRF Agricultural Genetics and Innovation Manager, was in charge of the presentation on “Directing the mindset of field technicians for productivity” during the LPN Congress 2018.
A clear definition of productivity is extremely important for proper team management. The alignment of area goals with the company’s strategic planning and annual guidelines will make it possible to determine the balance between the various components of productivity: safety, quality, field zootechnical performance, platform production cost, chain production cost, etc.
When we compare results between units and regions within units, with properly corrected data for all factors of production, the impact of technicians on the different productivity indicators becomes clear.
To achieve the potential results of a high performance team it is necessary to have structure, an optimal management system and standardized processes. Only by addressing these factors will we be able to introduce continuous improvements in the production process.
Building and motivating a high-performance team is clearly not the responsibility of the human resources area, although it can make an important contribution. The formation of an all-star team is the manager’s objective, but it must be clear to him that a high-performance team seeks a joint result, and that it is better to lose a few stars than the team spirit.
The establishment of a team begins with an adequate selection process, seeking alignment between the candidate’s objectives and the work to be performed, being a fundamental factor of motivation and maximum performance.
The right profile and the right training to perform the function are essential. The company is not an educational institution, it does not graduate professionals, although it is co-responsible for the updating of its technical team.
The maintenance of motivation through meritocratic evaluation, the possibility of continuous qualification, maintenance of perspective, and, mainly, through the continuous alignment of objectives, giving meaning to the work, will determine superior results.
